Theodore of Studios

Theodore of Studios
(759–826)
   Saint and Monastic Reformer.
Theodore was born in Constantinople. He was a nephew of St Plato and in 794 he succeeded his uncle as Abbot of Saccudium.
As a result of his determined opposition to the Emperor Constantine VI’s adulterous marriage, he was exiled to Thessalonica in 796. After Constantine had been deposed, he was recalled and in 799 his community moved to Studios in the face of Islamic raids. Because of Theodore’s efforts, Studios rapidly became an important monastic centre. However, he was banished again in 809 because he quarrelled with the Emperor Nicephoras I over the restitution of a priest who had blessed Constantine’s marriage, and again in 815 because he protested against the Emperor Leo V’s iconoclastic policy. Theodore is remembered for his determined defence of the independence of the Church from State control and for his contribution to the Iconoclastic Controversy.
